In the beginning...

Apparently, "we"--mostly motivated by Elizabeth--needed to setup a blog to share our "experiences" with pregnancy to our dedicated listeners, mostly consisting of mine and Elizabeth's mother. We tried to choose a background that was interesting and reflected "us" as a family unit. We have decided that we would like to decorate our first child's room with a star/constellation theme; to that end, we have attempted to "design" this blog in a theme concordant with our expectations of our intended baby room. The background is simply a star--one of the most beautiful and precious sights, having both spiritual and intellectual facets. The background of the forum text is the constellation Orion the Hunter, as seen through a telescope with post-image processing to generate a background appropriate for text (i.e., it has been lightened and the saturation increased to leave a light gray background with stars).

I personally find Orion to be the most fascinating and appealing constellation. Orion is a constellation visible in North America for most of the year; it is extremely prominent in the winter months. Within its confines are several beautiful emission nebula (the Orion Nebula, the Horsehead nebula, and the Flame Nebula, for instance) and classic examples of stars at various points along the main sequence. The constellation is a one-stop-shop for interesting science combined with aesthetic beauty, a fact that evokes a sense of spirituality in a viewport the size of a fist extended at arms length. I can think of no more appropriate symbol for the heart-warming feeling I get when thinking of my fragile, nascent, progeny.
